L6728TR Application Field and Working Principle

The L6728TR is a monolithic integrated circuit forming part of the PMIC – Voltage Regulators – DC DC Switching Controllers family of control products. It is intended to control and regulate the output of DC-DC converters, direct-current isolation modules and high-density switched-mode power supplies (SMPS).

The underlying principle of the operation of the L6728TR is based on a type of buck-boost DC-DC converter in which a voltage source is switched from low to high ‘on-time’ by means of a pulse-width-modulator (PWM). The voltage source is regulated by adjusting the corresponding ‘on-time’ pulse-width. The device is affected by input and output voltages, current consumption and the internal temperature of the chip.

Besides the voltage control, the circuit provides a number of protections aimed to ensure safe functioning of the DC-DC converter, such as undervoltage lockout, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown. It also features two enable pins, two independent pins for dynamic enable/disabling functions, two pins for dynamic output voltage up/down adjustment and a switching pin to select PWM/PFM mode. Additional features include a low-power shutdown mode, integrated over-temperature protection, high-switching frequency, low power consumption and pre-programmed soft-start.

The L6728TR is applicable to various applications, including laptops, instrumentation equipments and other personal electronics, telecommunications, automotive and industrial equipment. Most external components required for implementing the DC-DC converter are integrated on the chip, so the L6728TR requires minimal additional external components for implementation. Moreover, its small form factor reduces imple-mentation complexity.
