Working Principle

The L6731B is a special purpose voltage regulator that operates based on the voltage feed-back principle: the total current supplied by the input voltage is set by the output voltage. Each output has its own feedback loop and can be adjusted individually, providing a wide regulation range from 0.9 to 1.3 V. The L6731B has two sets of transistors, a higher and lower side switch, that can be individually switched on and off to adjust the total current supplied by the input voltage. Whenever the output voltage deviates from set levels, the voltage comparator of the IC will detect the output variance and initiates an action to activate the transistor switch. When the output voltage falls below the adjustable values, the higher side transistor will be activated and the current supply from the input voltage will increased, thus increasing the output voltage. Meanwhile, when the output voltage exceeds the set limit, the lower side transistor will be activated to reduce the current supply and the output voltage will fall.

The L6731B employs a layered regulation system that minimizes power dissipation and maximizes efficiency. When the output voltage is within acceptable tolerance range, the input voltage is switched off completely. This removes any power loss from the regulator during low output transients.
