L6730TR Application Field and Working Principle

The L6730TR is an advanced monolithic switching controller which belongs to the group of PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC-DC Switching Controllers. The device is specially designed to control the step-down switching converter based on a very high current-mode pulse-width modulator (PWM) technique. The embedded PWM control loop is able to maintain constant peak inductor current while operating in continuous conduction-mode over a wide input voltage range and to maintain constant output voltage over a wide output load range.Main features of the L6730TR are:
  • Very high frequency operation of up to 3 MHz
  • No external voltage reference needed
  • Very low supply current of 90 μA
  • Built-in Thermal Shut Down (TSD) and short-circuit protections
  • No external control circuitry needed
The L6730TR is a current-mode oscillator with an extremely high switching frequency of up to 3 MHz. The device employs a high-side N-channel MOSFET and a low-side P-channel MOSFET. The device works in a current-driven mode, where the output voltage is sensed at the inductor current and then used to control the switching action of the internal power switches.The built-in TSD feature of the L6730TR will provide an absolute protection against overload, continuous short-circuits of the supply and output. In case of thermal overload, the device\'s power stage will shut down, effectively disabling power output, thus preventing damage to the device, applications, and people.

Working Principle

The L6730TR works in a current-driven mode, where the output voltage is sensed at the inductor current, then used to control the switching action of the internal power switches. An internal current limitation circuit provides improved efficiency at light loads and reduces the input capacitance size.The device includes three operation modes:
  • Normal mode operation, where the L6730TR shares the maximum available current (pulsed current-mode) from the input supply. This mode results in a peak current delivered to the output capacitor of up to 10 A.
  • Burst mode operation, where the L6730TR reduces the maximum available current to improve efficiency and reduce input capacitance size. This mode also ensures noise-free operation by minimizing the output ripple.
  • Shutdown mode, which allows the L6730TR to be put into a low power mode for power-saving purposes.
The main operation block diagram of the L6730TR is shown in the figure below:L6730TR Operation Block DiagramAs shown in the figure, the device integrates an error amplifier, a high-side switch driver, a low-side switch driver, a current-sense amplifier, and a voltage-limiter circuit. The error amplifier generates the voltage swing, which is compared with the average current sense signal (CS) coming from the current-sense amplifier. The CS signal is proportional to the voltage across the output capacitor and is compared to the voltage reference.The voltage reference is the reference voltage used to accurately control the output voltage, while the peak inductor current limit is used to ensure a properly operating power stage as well as to limit the output current. The CS control output is then used to drive the high-side and low-side Mosfet switches of the power stage.
