L6730B Application Field and Working Principle
The L6730B belongs to the category of PMIC (Power Management IC) voltage regulators and DC-DC switching controllers. As one of the most sophisticated and modern power switches offered by STMicroelectronics, it features operational efficiency and low heat sink requirements, making it ideal for DC/DC point-of-load (POL) applications.It is designed to offer a maximum efficiency of up to 96% with minimal design effort and the highest level of performance. It also enables superior temperature and transient characteristics due to its built-in temperature and current protection circuitry.When used in buck (step-down) or boost (step-up) modes, the L6730B can easily meet the requirements of a wide variety of power applications at up to 500 kHz switching frequency. Its adjustable buck mode voltage range is from 0.5 V to 5 V and the adjustable mode boost range is from 3.3 V to 20 V.The L6730B offers precise voltage regulation, consisting of an internal bandgap reference and highly precise current detection and monitoring. It also contains a high-frequency operation enable/disable signal allowing for very precise timing control.The working principle of the L6730B is based on a simple, but efficient, switched-mode topology, where the device cycles between two distinct states: on and off. The “on” state allows current to flow through the device, while the “off” state prevents current flow, thus controlling the power conversion process. This control is done through high-frequency switching of the underlying FET (Field-Effect Transistor) devices and pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) control. The PWM control circuit inside the L6730B uses an internal comparator in order to adjust the amount of current that flows through the FETs and the power switch. This ensures constant voltage output across a wide range of load conditions.The very high efficiency of the L6730B makes it an ideal solution for many types of point-of-load applications, such as distributed power systems, automotive applications, industrial power systems, and more.
