LD1117AV18 is a three-terminal voltage regulator designed to provide a stable voltage output for wide input voltage range. This device is available in adjustable and fixed-voltage versions with current limiting and thermal shutdown protection.

LD1117AV18 is classified under PMIC-Voltage regulators- linear. It is commonly used in various applications such as PC motherboards, audio systems, power supplies, instrumentation, business machines and industrial control systems.

The nominal output current provided by the LD1117AV18 is 100mA. When the output current exceeds 250mA, the device will enter the current-limiting state and a voltage drop will occur at the output. This voltage drop will remain until the output current returns below 100mA.

The LD1117AV18 also has a thermal shutdown feature to protect the device from being damaged by excessive temperatures. When the junction temperature exceeds 140° C, the device will shut down and the output will be shorted to ground.

The working principle of LD1117AV18 voltage regulator is based on the series voltage regulator concept. The device contains an internal voltage reference, an error amplifier, a series pass transistor, and a control circuit.

The reference voltage sets the output voltage of LD1117AV18. The error amplifier monitors the output voltage and compares it with the reference voltage. The output of the error amplifier is then fed to the series pass transistor which adjusts the output voltage.

The control circuit monitors the output of the error amplifier and the output of the pass transistor and adjusts the bias current to the pass transistor to maintain the output voltage.

The LD1117AV18 also has a built-in current limit circuit which limits the maximum peak current allowed to pass through the pass transistor. If the current through the pass transistor exceeds the limit, the circuit will shut down and the output will be shorted to ground.
