LD1117DTC-R Application Field and Working Principle

LD1117DTC-R, a low dropout linear voltage regulator that is available in the TO-220 package, has plenty of applications such as general-purpose power supplies, voltage regulators, digital cameras, fluorescent lighting and banks of LEDs. This device requires a minimum increase of input voltage to output voltage ratio when the load increases, which is called low dropout (LDO), thus providing a low stable output voltage with very little noise and ripple. The LD1117DTC-R can provide 3A of peak current and 0.8A of continuous current. Its micropower shutdown mode allows the regulator to draw only a tiny amount of current in the shutdown condition, which is less than 1uA. It’s capable of driving loads up to 1.2Ohm and can regulate output voltage to within 3V (relative to the power input). Its output voltage which is adjustable in a wide range from 1.2V to 20V, is set by two external resistors. The LD1117DTC-R has an integrated thermal shutdown. Its output voltage may be trimmed to an accuracy of ±2.5% and its quiescent current is adjustable. Its dropout voltage is specified at a low 0.25V, making it ideal for systems with input voltage very close to the output voltage. The LD1117DTC-R provides short-circuit protection and current limiting which ensure its continuous reliability. The circuit diagram of the LD1117DTC-R regulator is fairly simple. It has an input pin where the input voltage is applied, an output pin where the output voltage is provided, a junction where two currents merge, and a feedback pin where the output voltage is sensed and compared to a preset reference voltage in order to adjust the duty cycle of the output to maintain the desired output voltage. The duty cycle is controlled by an internal error amplifier, and the junction is the current sensing element which provides the current limit protection. The basic operation of the LD1117DTC-R is shown in the following diagram. The input voltage enters the regulator, and it is compared with a reference voltage (Vref). If the input voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the error amplifier reduces the duty cycle of the output. The reference voltage sets the output voltage of the regulator. When the output voltage drops below the reference voltage, the error amplifier increases the duty cycle of the output until the output voltage is equal to the reference voltage. The error amplifier continually adjusts the duty cycle of the output voltage so that the output voltage will remain at the desired level.The LD1117DTC-R also has a built-in thermal shutdown feature in order to protect the device against overheating. The thermal shutdown is activated when the device reaches a certain temperature which can be adjusted via the external components on the board. This feature allows the device to automatically turn itself off in order to prevent damage caused by overheating. The device will automatically turn itself back on once the temperature has cooled down to a safe limit. The LD1117DTC-R is an easy and reliable way to regulate the output voltage of your systems, as it can provide the exact output voltage you need with very little additional external circuitry. It is also ideal for systems with input voltage close to the output voltage as its dropout voltage is extremely low. On top of that, this device is capable of driving loads up to a maximum of 1.2Ohm and offers current limiting capability for extra safety.
