Working Principle

The LM25118MHX/NOPB consists of three modes of operation: Sync. PWM mode, Skip cycle mode, and PFM mode. In this controller the MODE pin is used to select the operating mode. When the MODE pin is high, the controller operates in Sync. PWM mode, when it is low the controller operates in Skip cycle mode. In Sync. PWM mode the controller operates in Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) to ensure high efficiency while minimizing switching noise. Soft-start operation is achieved by ramping up the output voltage at startup. In skip cycle mode, the controller reduces the switching frequency when the output voltage is close to the regulation voltage, resulting in reduced power dissipation and improved efficiency at light loads.

The LM25118MHX/NOPB also includes protection features such as Over-Current Protection (OCP) and Over-Voltage Protection (OVP). OCP monitors the load current and limits the maximum output current accordingly and OVP monitors the output voltage and limits the voltage when it exceeds a certain threshold.
