Introduction

The Working Principle

The LM2903DRE4 operates through a principle known as differential-input operation. In other words, the signal being amplified or processed is split in two and each half is analyzed using different references. The aim of doing this is to reduce the noise that can creep in to the signal path. The differential-input amplifier uses two different types of input voltage sources, the (+) and (-) supply. The (+) supply is used to produce a signal to be amplified at the input and the (-) supply is used to provide a reference level for the input signal. The (+) supply is usually supplied with a variable voltage, typically from 1 to 10V and the (-) supply is usually supplied with a fixed voltage of 0.5V or 2.5V.The output of the LM2903DRE4 is a combination of the two inputs, it is a negative voltage if the (-) input is larger than the (+) input and is a positive voltage if the (+) input is larger than the (-) input. The size of the output volts is controlled by the gain of the amplifier, the larger the voltage difference between the two inputs, the larger the output voltage. The LM2903DRE4 typically has an open-loop gain (gain with no feedback applied) of 100000, the highest industry standard. The LM2903DRE4 has two additional pins, one is the reverse bias voltage source and the other is the hysteresis control pin. The reverse bias voltage is used to control the leakage currents of the input transistors and also to reduce the gain of the amplifier at lower input voltages. The hysteresis control is used to control the ‘dead zone’ of the circuit, the dead zone is the region where the output does not reverse even though the inputs have reversed. This can be used for controlling the edges of a digital signal. It is very common for the LM2903DRE4 to be used in digital signal processing circuits and it is this application that makes it so versatile.
