Introduction: The LM2936M-3.3/NOPB is a linear fixed-frequency step-down switching regulator from Texas Instruments ideal for low power applications. This voltage regulator offers excellent efficiency, line and load regulation, stability, low noise and transient response. Features of the device also include fast response to line and load changes, short total cycle time, and low output ripple voltage.Application field:The LM2936M-3.3/NOPB can be used in a variety of low power applications such as battery chargers, laptop computers, servers, and embedded systems. This voltage regulator is also well-suited for applications requiring wide input voltage range and high power density. Due to its high efficiency, the LM2936M-3.3/NOPB is ideal for applications where power converter losses need to be minimized.Technical features:• Wide input voltage range (2.7V to 28V) • Precision feedback voltage of 3.3V • Gate drive for external N-channel mosfet • 82% efficiency over a wide load current range• 300 kHz frequency operation• Thermal shutdown protection• Current-limited, short-circuit protection• Internal compensation• Soft-start • Output current of up to 1.5AWorking principle:The LM2936M-3.3/NOPB is a switching regulator, which employs a voltage mode control scheme with a fixed frequency of 300 kHz. It operates by switching an on-chip N-channel MOSFET (or an external one) at a constant frequency. The output voltage is regulated by adjusting the switching duty cycle. The input voltage applied to the LM2936M-3.3/NOPB is compared with a built-in reference voltage of 3.3V. Depending on the comparison result, the control circuit of the regulator instructs the switching MOSFET to turn off when the input voltage is greater than the output voltage and to turn on when the input voltage is lower than the output voltage.The feedback voltage of 3.3V is maintained by adjusting the duty cycle of the switching MOSFET. The output voltage is controlled with a high degree of accuracy by propagating an error voltage from the feedback error amplifier to the Control circuit. The error voltage is compared with the voltage ripple generated by the switching action and the output voltage is regulated by reducing or increasing the switching frequency.At light loads the LM2936M-3.3/NOPB enters a low power standby mode and the switching frequency is doubled to ensure the stability of the feedback loop. This also reduces the output ripple and improves transient response at light loads.
