If the external voltage resistsive value is lower than the reference, the built-in power transistor turns on and supplies current to the regulator output until the output voltage reaches the desired level. When this happens, the power transistor shuts off, and the output voltage remains stable.
In Switching mode, the internal voltage reference and error amplifier are still used for voltage regulation, but the power switch is replaced by a high-frequency switcher. The switcher turns on and off repetitively to keep the voltage at the output constant. By switching the current on and off rapidly, the LM2937IMPX-3.3 remains efficient even at light loads and helps to minimize the generation of EMI (electromagnetic interference).
The LM2937IMPX-3.3 also offers over-temperature protection and thermal-shutdown protection. The over-temperature protection works by monitoring the die temperature of the IC, and when it reaches a certain level, the IC is shut down. The thermal-shutdown protection is set to a higher temperature and is meant to protect the device from being damaged due to extreme heat. The LM2937IMPX-3.3 also has an internal current-limiting circuit to prevent over-current conditions.
