The LM2990S-15/NOPB is an advanced low-dropout linear regulator of the Standard, Adjustable, and Low-Voltage-Dropout Adjustable (LVD) series from Texas Instruments. These regulators are designed for an extensive range of voltage and current conditions, and are capable of operating over a wide input voltage range from 1.2 V to 30 V. With high reliability, wide temperature range, and low current consumption, these linear regulators are ideal for a variety of system design applications.

The LM2990S-15/NOPB is a monolithic integrated circuit containing an adjustable 3-terminal regulator, which has an adjustable output voltage of ± 15 V at currents of up to 40 mA. This device has a guaranteed dropout voltage of 0.3 V or less and also includes temperature compensated current limit and thermal shutdown. The device includes built-in short circuit protection and over-voltage protection as well as a large input voltage range from 1.2 V to 30 V, making it well-suited for various applications.

The LM2990S-15/NOPB has an adjustable regulator controlling the output voltage. It implements an internal regulator that utilizes a modified intermediate frequency (IMF) PWM control. This IMF control voltage is compared with a reference voltage to generate a PWM signal that modulates the duty cycle of the PWM output stage.

The duty cycle is proportional to the difference between the desired output voltage and the actual output voltage. The control loop then senses the actual output voltage, compares it to its programmed output voltage, and adjusts the duty cycle automatically to regulate the output.

The LM2990S-15/NOPB also has current-limit protection, a proprietary on-off switching circuit designed to reduce pop noise, and a thermal-shutdown circuit. The current-limit circuit senses the load current, and reduces the duty cycle if the current goes beyond the programmed limit. The thermal-shutdown circuit shuts the voltage regulator down when the chip temperature exceeds its maximum allowable temperature.
