LM3489MM/NOPB is an integrated buck-boost switching controller suitable for a range of applications, including LED drivers, battery-operated systems, and various portable applications where energy efficiency and minimized power consumption is key. It provides the functional flexibility and high performance integration of a buck and a boost regulator, providing an ideal solution for single-inductor based implementations in space-constrained power designs.

The LM3489MM/NOPB has a wide input voltage range that operates from 3.0V to 42V, and provides a programmable auxiliary output that can be used to boost the efficiency of the system switching up to 95%, and reduce power dissipation. It is built with optimized frequency and voltage feedback control circuitry and intelligent fully-tested open-loop protection features, which protect the controller\'s power MOSFET and output stage from over-temperature, over-voltage and over-load conditions. Furthermore, the LM3489MM/NOPB integrates an adjustable high side current limit which provides a precise current regulation feature.

The working principle of an LM3489MM/NOPB is based on the voltage feedback control architecture. The controller uses the output voltage of the main power stage as its reference voltage, which is compared to the programmed voltage set point. The comparison between the two is fed to an error amplifier that generates an output voltage needed to drive the MOSFETs and direct the power into the load, while maintaining the required voltage output independent of the input voltage and load. The auxiliary output of the LM3489MM/NOPB controls the power MOSFETs, thus controlling the voltage across its output.

All the necessary protection features, such as the over-current and over-voltage protection, are integrated into the LM3489MM/NOPB and are controlled by the power MOSFETs. The device also includes a built-in soft-start feature, which helps reduce inrush current, resulting in reduced output voltage variation, as well as a short-circuit protection that shuts down the output during abnormal conditions like short circuits, over-currents, and over-voltages.
