In continuous conduction mode, the switch-mode regulator is like a classical switching regulator wherein the switching MOSFETs are used to modulate the average input voltage to achieve the desired regulated output voltage. In discontinuous conduction mode, however, the LM3671MF-1.25/NOPB is able to modulate the output voltage more efficiently than a classical switching voltage regulator.In continuous conduction mode, the MOSFETs are operated in switch-mode, switching on and off based on the input cycles. When the MOSFET is turned on, inductor current builds up and charges the output capacitance. When the MOSFET is turned off, the output capacitance takes over and discharges through the impedance of the load, reducing the output voltage. This process is repeated multiple times, consequently regulating the output voltage.In discontinuous conduction mode, the MOSFET is put in a situation wherein it will turn off and turn on faster, resulting in higher ripple. The current then flows and charges the output capacitance until the voltage builds up to a certain level, at which point the MOSFET is turned off and the output capacitance starts discharging. At the same time, the current begins to decrease until zero is reached, at which point the MOSFET is turned on to start the cycle again.
