The LM431SBCMLX is a three-terminal adjustable voltage regulator in SOT-363/SOT-89 package and is precision two-terminal shunt regulators for use in references, where programs and logic monitoring are needed. It is designed for use in Voltage Reference applications and provides high impedance buffered outputs to facilitate flexible voltage reference designs.

This product provides a buffered voltage output and has an adjustment voltage range from 0.36 V to 6 V with a settling time of 70 µs

Working Principle

The LM431SBCMLX works as a voltage reference by setting the operating voltage of the device through the output voltage adjustment terminal (Vext). The reference voltage is regulated with a control loop that works by the device comparing an internal 2.5 V reference to the output voltage. Any difference between the two is amplified by a series of transistors and the result is used to change the operating voltage of the device.

The operating voltage of the device is then adjusted in response to the changes of the Vext input. The device also has several protection loop features that monitor the input current (IP) and the temperature of the device (Tref). If the IP exceeds a certain value, the device will automatically shut down and the output voltage will be disabled. If the Tref of the device exceeds a certain value, the device will also shut down and the output voltage will be disabled.

In this way, the LM431SBCMLX can work as a programmable voltage reference, providing a high impedance buffered output that is helpful for various voltage reference designs.
