The LM5642XMH is a high performance DC/DC buck controller from Texas Instruments. It is designed to support the latest Intel® CoreTM processor platforms, enabling designers to achieve ultra-low core voltage designs. It provides a very high-frequency output voltage accurate to 0.8% over temperature while also providing power savings through low quiescent current when the processor enters idle states. The LM5642XHM can also be used with other wide input voltage ranges and is suitable for applications that require very tight voltage regulation accuracy, such as high performance and portable devices.The LM5642XHM is a 4-phase synchronous buck converter integrating an adaptive voltage positioning (AVP) and advanced digital features. It supports start-up in less than 100µs low-dropout form factors and phase-shedding which lowers power losses by rebalancing the current and reducing heat development.The working principle of the LM5642XMH is based on a 4-phase synchronous buck converter. It consists of four high-side CONTROL44VF MOSFETs and four low-side CONTROL44VF MOSFETs, which are switched in parallel to create a voltage difference between the input and the output. The input voltage is regulated by the duty cycle of the synchronous switch signals, which are generated based on the feedback from the average current signals taken from the output current sense pins. The LM5642XMH also features an external reference resistor divider to provide the output voltage sensing.The LM5642XHM delivers all of the features necessary for digital voltage regulation, including an integrated over-temperature protection, adjustable output voltage soft-start, and including PLL-based frequency synchronization. In addition, the LM5642XMH supports preset and dynamic loop compensation, enabling designers to easily adjust the voltage and current loop gains resulting in high-output voltage accuracy over temperature and line voltage variations.LM5642XMH is suitable for applications requiring support for start-up in low-dropout form factors, load-transients and multi-phase operation for ultra-low core voltage designs. It is designed for point-of-load applications, working with either 2S and 3S Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) and Digital Power monitoring.
