Linear comparators are electronic components that come in a wide range of sizes and types. As their name suggests, they are used to compare two or more input signals, either analog or digital, and provide an output signal depending on the comparison result. The type of output signal can vary, but typically include logic based signals, LED indicators, or even relay control signals.

One such kind of linear comparator device is the LMV393M/NOPB which belongs to the LMV393 family from Texas Instruments. As for its working principle, the LMV393M/NOPB operates similarly to many other comparators that are based on voltage comparison. Its internal amplifier then compares the voltage potential between the Inverting (–) and the Non-Inverting (+) input terminals. If the voltage potential of the – input is higher relative to the + input, the output state of the device would turn low. Conversely, if the + input is higher relative to the – input, the output will turn high. In case there is no voltage difference between the two inputs, then the output behavior of the LMV393M/NOPB can be either high or low, depending on its initial state.

Apart from the voltage comparison circuit, the LMV393M/NOPB also has adjustable hysteresis and phase shift options, thus making it suitable for a wide array of applications. The adjustable hysteresis eliminates unwanted oscillations and does so by setting a threshold level between the high and the low output states. Upon reaching this hysteresis level, the oscillation of the output state between high and low is effectively prevented, as it is locked in either state until the external voltage is changed. Additionally, the phase shift function allows for up to 200ns of delay in the output response time. This feature comes in handy in cases where a fixed, minimal delay is required between two signals, in order to account for any response lags.
