The LNK6425D-TL is an AC/DC converter, an offline switcher specifically developed by Power Integrations (PI). It is capable of providing 50W enclosed power supplies, and is designed to meet the ENERGY STAR requirements.

The working principle of the LNK6425D-TL is very similar to most AC/DC converters, the difference being its compact size, and therefore the use of a switching power frequency that is much higher than with other converters.

When an AC voltage is applied to the input, an oscillator produces a high frequency square wave, which is internally amplified and applied to the primary winding of a transformer. This transformer then step-downs the voltage to a desired level and also provides electrical isolation. The voltage is then converted to DC using rectifiers and integrated filters. The output voltage is regulated using PulseWidth Modulation (PWM) with an error amplifier and a voltage reference source.

The high frequency operation has several advantages including high efficiency, fast transient response, use of thin wires, and reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI). It also eliminates the need for a bulky transformer, which results in a much smaller device.
