Introduction

The LNK6416D-TL is a completely integrated, highly efficient off-line switch mode power supply (SMPS) and AC-DC converter, which is offered in a thermally-enhanced plastic SOIC-8L package and an encapsulated TO-263 package. The highly integrated and efficient single-chip solution of the LNK6416D-TL reduces external components, lowering system costs, as well as optimizing time to market.

Application Fields and Working Principles

The LNK6416D-TL is suitable for a range of applications for standalone and/or non-isolated power supply designs in low and medium power adapters, lighting applications, and other electronic systems. The device combines a dual (primary and secondary) switching system composed of a high frequency power switch, energy-storage inductor and a powerenhancer synchronous rectifier in a single package to provide a complete AC DC converter solution. The power switch utilizes advanced CMOS process technology with an integrated high-voltage startup and drive circuit, which reduces the system cost, board space and design time. The primary side switching is synchronized to an internal oscillator through a fixed pulse width modulation (PWM) modulator. The built-in leading-edge blanking (LEB) circuit ensures a low no-load input power and low average primary side current.The secondary side control allows the power supply design to be accurately regulated with tight output voltage ripple. The synchronous rectification control is accomplished by periodic pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals obtained from the primary side PWM, with the primary side turns the synchronous rectifier on for minimum conduction losses and high system efficiency. When the AC input voltage is detected as low, both primary and auxiliary sides areactivated to increase the low line value and provide a more stable input power.The LNK6416D-TL includes actively balanced multi-mode current-limiting protection with internal temperature foldback for both primary and auxiliary sides. The device also provides soft start capability, over-temperature protection (OTP) and brownout protection (BOP) that prevent the system from faulty operation.In summary, the LNK6416D-TL integrates a high frequency power switch, energy- storage inductor and a powerenhancer synchronous rectifier in a single package, providing a complete AC DC converter solution. It is suitable for applications such as lighting and low and medium power adapters. Various protection features, such as current limit, over-temperature protection, brownout protection and soft start, are provided to ensure optimal performance and system reliablity.
