The LNK6427D is a fully integrated guady blocking oscillation (GBO) flyback power supply IC featuring power factor correction (PFC) and burst-mode operation (BM). It is tailored for high efficiency, low standby power and minimum external components. This AC/DC converter powers offline switchers and other low power applications in the consumer, industrial and consumer electronic markets.
The LNK6427D has the distinctive advantage of being designed for low power applications like consumer electronics for improved standby power performance. Our aim during the design process was to provide the customer with a great value solution in a single integrated device. Our device is robust and efficient and it is able to control stand power modes like BM and THM to cut down standby power to a fraction of the total power consumed in active modes.
The LNK6427D integrates a power factor correction (PFC) controller and a resonant-mode secondary side controller operating in guady blocking oscillator (GBO) topology. The GBO controller with random burst mode operation improves the light-load efficiency and reduces the stand-by power to extend the product working life. Other features of the LNK6427D include an accurate and fast 200 kHz switching frequency which is adjustable with an external capacitor and a low threshold compensation or partial frequency synchronization to the near-by switcher ICs. It also provides a voltage internal feedback, reduces external components and simplifies the PFC design.
The LNK6427D supports a wide input voltage range of up to 400V AC, which is adjustable by an internal voltage regulator with only one external resistor, making it suitable for various AC input environments. The output voltage is adjustable with a resistor network and can be set up to 16V.
The LNK6427D utilizes a very low Voltage clamping method in the output discovery, which helps to minimize the power loss in the event of an overload. Additionally, its large thermal protection temperatures and an over voltage clamp means that it is more reliable than can be achieved with discrete components.
In terms of working principle, the LNK6427D operates in two modes – continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM). CCM operation is employed during light or no load on the secondary side. In the CCM operation, the output current is in continuous conduction and has a characteristic falling-rising-falling waveform. In the DCM operation, the output current is kept at zero for a specific period. This mode helps to reduce the overall standby power during light loads.
The LNK6427D is also equipped with The GBO topology, which is optimized for high light-load efficiency and better standby current performance power. GBO operation is enabled when the output voltage drop to a set point, and the device automatically switches between DCM and CCM operation in order to save power while maintaining the optimum performance. The GBO controller also has internal slope compensation and frequency jittering, which helps to improve the system EMI and transient response.
In terms of protection, the LNK6427D provides various levels of protection to extend the system life. It features over temperature protection, over current protection and over voltage protection. It also provides a thermal shutdown protection to avoid excessive heat buildup when the temperature exceeds the absolute maximum rating.
