LP3918TLX-A/NOPB Application Field and Working PrincipleThe LP3918TLX-A/NOPB is an integrated monolithic power switch integrated circuit (IC) based on an advanced CMOS process to provide a high efficiency, low quiescent current linear, low dropout (LDO) regulator to support multiple applications. It includes a bootstrap power switch circuit, a low quiescent current linear regulator and a built-in thermal protection feature. With the inclusion of a negative logic integrated power switch, the LP3918TLX-A/NOPB allows for a compact, reliable and cost-effective power solution for multiple applications.The LP3918TLX-A/NOPB is primarily intended for battery charging solutions, specifically Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) and Nickel-metal Hydride (NiMH) battery charging applications. It is currently utilized in a variety of high-end portable and stationary applications, such as mobile phones, notebook computers, digital cameras, digital camcorders and engines, among others. It offers very low quiescent current, wide input voltage range and high efficiency in these applications.The LP3918TLX-A/NOPB consists of three basic functions: a bootstrap power switch, a low quiescent current linear regulator and a thermal protection feature. The bootstrap power switch enables the device to operate over wide input voltage range and the low quiescent current linear regulator enables low current operation in battery charging applications. The thermal protection feature provides protection against over current condition and ensures reliable operation.The LP3918TLX-A/NOPB operates by first configuring the internal logic of the device. The bootstrap power switch is activated by setting the enable pin (EN) to a high logic (high) level. Once enabled, the power switch begins to switch from low to high, cycling until the setpoint voltage is reached. At this point the regulator takes over, bringing the voltage to the set point. The LP3918TLX-A/NOPB then maintains its output voltage within the acceptable range until it receives a shutting down signal from the system, at which point the regulator shuts down.The LP3918TLX-A/NOPB also offers a built-in thermal protection feature, which is activated at an internally set temperature limit. This prevents the device from further operation until the heat is safely dissipated. The LP3918TLX-A/NOPB also provides a soft start feature, which ensures low inrush current and reduced output voltage ripple.The LP3918TLX-A/NOPB is an excellent choice for battery charging solutions, offering high efficiency operation, wide input voltage range and low quiescent current.
