LP3964EMPX-2.5 is a linear voltage regulator from Texas Instruments (TI). It is a highly efficient, low-noise and ultra-low-cost power management Integrated Circuit (IC) designed for use in low-voltage applications, such as Point-of-Load (POL) and Portable Devices. This PMIC can be used to provide both regulated and unregulated voltage output. It also features a wide range of protection features such as undervoltage lockout (UVLO), fault diagnostics, thermal protection, current limiting and overvoltage protection.
The LP3964EMPX-2.5 offers a wide range of adjustable output voltage from 1.5V to 5V, with accuracy of +/- 0.5%. The output voltage can be set using an external resistor divider. The Output current is rated up to 300mA and Ripple rejection up to 70dB. It is also short-circuit protected and has an integrated P-Channel MOSFET gate for output downscaling. The quiescent current for the LP3964EMPX-2.5 is just 32uA at full load.
The LP3964EMPX-2.5 can be used in a wide range of applications as it supports a wide range of input voltages from 2.5V to 6V, hence it can be used in an even wider range of application by using a synchronous buck converter. Working Principle
The LP3964EMPX-2.5 PMIC has an internal P-channel MOSFET (SLMOS) for output downscaling. SLMOS has a gate structure optimized for low-noise operation, providing reducing switching noises and EMI noise. The SLMOS is controlled through a PWM, with a modulation frequency up to 1.2MHz, allowing to constantly adjust the output voltage.
The static regulation scheme of the LP3964EMPX-2.5 PMIC uses an external resistor divider. A voltage reference and error amplifier compare the feedback voltage to the reference voltage and adjust the PWM duty cycle accordingly, thus adjusting the output voltage to the desired setting. The input voltage is also compared with a UVLO circuit and the SLMOS is not switched on until the voltage is above the minimum operational voltage.
The LP 3964EMPX-2.5 PMIC also features other protection circuits like current limiting, thermal shutdown and overvoltage protection. These protection circuits are designed to protect the circuit from potential sources of damage, by shutting off the SLMOS gate if any of the protections are triggered.
