The LP3986BL-2626 is a high performance, energy-efficient post-voltage regulator from Texas Instruments. It is designed specifically for applications where high efficiency, low dropout voltage and low output impedance are required. It is a 3-terminal linear voltage regulator that offers output voltage accuracy of ±1% over the full temperature range and provides excellent transient response. It can be configured for a wide range of output voltages from 1.5V to 26V.

Working Principle of LP3986BL-2626

The LP3986BL-2626 is designed to provide an adjustable output voltage and is easy to use. The desired output voltage is set by selecting the appropriate resistor combination. For example, if a 5V output voltage is desired, the LP3986BL-2626 could have a resistor combination of R1=150K and R2=3K3. This combination would provide a 5V output voltage when applied to the LP3986BL-2626.

The LP3986BL-2626 employs current-limit protection to provide over-current protection. The current limit is user selected using the external resistor at the Adjust pin. The current limit is the maximum output current that the regulator can sustain without entering a current-limit state. The peak current limit or maximum output current is determined by the setting of the external resistor connected to the Adjust pin, with the Optimum value being 1K to 2K ohm.

The LP3986BL-2626 offer two-level thermal protection. In the first level, the regulator enters Thermal Shutdown (TSD) when the junction temperature exceeds 125°C. The Thermal Shutdown feature is designed to limit the junction temperature to safe operating limits. In the second level the junction temperature is monitored to prevent overtemperature conditions prior to entering the Thermal and Keep-Out Zone.

The LP3986BL-2626 series also offers external POR (power on reset) and output short-circuit protection. The POR circuit monitors supply voltage and ensures that the output voltage is reset when the supply voltage is low and the output is out of regulation. The output short-circuit protection if applied to the external bypass capacitor of the regulator. Larger values will increase capacitor size, but may degrade performance or result in noise or ripple.

The LP3986BL-2626 features are ideal for low dropout, high efficiency and fast transient response applications. The device is available in a wide range of output voltage options and offers adjustable output voltage accuracy over the full temperature range. It is designed to provide superior current-limit and thermal protection, as well as protection against output short-circuits and power-on reset.
