Working Principle
The voltage regulators in LP3986TL-2929/NOPB are error amplifiers, which are voice-controlled oscillators or voltage references. An error amplifier is a circuit which compares the actual input voltage to the desired voltage and adjusts the output voltage accordingly. The error amplifier takes a reference voltage, which is the desired output voltage, and compares it with an actual measured voltage taken from a voltage divider circuit. If the measured voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the output voltage is increased; likewise, if the measured voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the output voltage is decreased.
The oscillator component acts as a circuit which causes the output voltage to oscillate between two levels until the error amplifier can detect a stable level. This oscillating behavior is the reason why the voltage regulator is able to achieve more precise output voltages than traditional linear regulators. The oscillator component can also be used to reduce electrical noise, which can interfere with the proper functioning of the voltage regulator.
The LP3986TL-2929/NOPB also has a low quiescent current – 100 μA (typical)– which makes it highly suitable for battery-powered applications. It is also very efficient, with a power dissipation of 900 mW (max).
