The LT3489EMS8E#TRPBF is a fixed frequency high efficiency synchronous current-mode step-down DC/DC switching regulator with Eco-Mode™ operation that minimizes the high ripple current in the inductor encountered in Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) mode. This device is part of a family of switching regulators in the PMIC voltage regulators and DC DC switching regulators (DC/DC).

Device Overview

The LT3489EMS8E#TRPBF is available in a very small 8-lead, thermally enhanced TSOT-23-8 package. This device is designed to provides up to 1A peak output current and 5.5V output from an input voltage of 2.7V to 5.5V. It utilizes fixed frequency, frequency dithering, synchronous PWM operation, with an adjustable frequency from 200kHz to 2MHz. The device has two selectable operation modes with an adjustable average current mode, or Eco-Mode, for very low no-load quiescent current. The user has full control of the output voltage, low power shutdown with the EN pin, and adjustable soft-start. It is ideal for regulating voltage from single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) or higher input sources found in battery-powered systems, as well as many industrial, consumer, automotive and medical applications.

Application Field

The LT3489EMS8E#TRPBF is designed to provide a very small, low power solution for voltage regulation in single-cell and higher Li+ battery-powered systems. It is suitable for a variety of industrial, consumer, automotive and medical applications, including digital cameras, digital audio players, portable projectors, digital still cameras, cell phones, wireless handsets, digital video cameras and PDAs.

Working Principle

The LT3489EMS8E#TRPBF is a synchronous high efficiency current-mode step-down DC/DC switching regulator. The device features a fixed frequency, frequency dithering, synchronous PWM operation with an adjustable frequency from 200kHz to 2MHz. It has two selectable operation modes, with an adjustable average current mode, or Eco-Mode, for very low power no-load quiescent current. The user has full control of the output voltage via an external resistor divider, low power shutdown with the EN pin and adjustable soft-start function.

The device is capable of providing peak output currents up to 1A with efficiencies greater than 85%. The main loops are current mode, providing fast transient response and excellent line, load and temperature stability. The output voltage is maintained by monitoring the current, and controlling the switch on/off cycles in order to match the average inductor current to the reference voltage. The frequency of operation and power dissipation are reduced in light-load conditions by switching to the Eco-Mode flow rate.

In Eco-Mode flow rate, the current-mode loop reduces the switching frequency during light load condition. The device\'s control loop keeps a constant average current and hence the output voltage is maintained. This improves the efficiency of the switch mode regulator during light load condition while maintaining a good transient response and output voltage stability.
