This Hot Swap controller offers an asynchronous, general-purpose, open-drain gate driver designed to keep the power-supply switch ( MOSFETs and BJT\'s ) off until the power supply voltage has reached a safe and regulated level. The device also offers an integrated current limit control circuit, which prevents short circuits and other high current transient events from damaging the circuit or the load board. This Hot Swap controller is ideal for protection during power-up, power-down and equipment insertion or removal.

The working principle of the LTC4231HMS-2#PBF is based on the “active enable” architecture, which allows the system rather to pull an enable line low, in order to turn on the power switch, and thus providing a controllable insertion of the external load circuit into the power bus and preventing high-current transients. The “active enable” feature of the LTC4231HMS-2#PBF is achieved by using a voltage-controlled, low-side output (VIN_SET) as a control input. The voltage-controlled output drives a FET to provide an Enable signal to also drive the upper side FET. In addition, the Enable signal will be maintained off until the input voltage (VIN) rises above the set point. Once VIN reaches the set point, the Enable signal is activated and the load is then allowed to be energized.
