Working Principle of LTM4620IY
The LTM4620IY is a monolithic step-down DC DC converter that uses the current-mode control topology. It is an integrated circuit with on-chip switches low-side MOSFETs, and integrated current-sense amplifier. The operating principle of the device is based on the concept of synchronous buck converter and by using two switches alternately, the stored energy in an inductor is transferred to the output voltage in a controlled manner.
When the internal switch is high, the switch conducts current from the input to the output and charges the output capacitance load. The synchronous duration is dependent on the measured inductor current, which is realized by the internal current sense amplifier. As soon as the current value reaches its reference, the internal switch is switched off and the current flows from the inductor to the output capacitance load.
To ensure current-mode control, the sense amplifier samples the sensed inductor current. The output voltage is compared to the reference voltage and an error signal is generated. The current-mode control block is responsible for the generation of an error signal, which is then multiplied by a gain factor and the resulting control signal is used to control the MOSFETs. The control loop is stable for a certain range of output capacitances. The low-side MOSFET absorbs the stored energy in the inductor while the high-side MOSFET transfers the energy to the output load.
To achieve high efficiency, the LTM4620IY features the burst-mode operation (BOM) and the discontinuous current mode (DCM). Both BOM and DCM are device settings that enable the device to reduce power consumption and enhance efficiency when the output load is low. In BOM, the internal switch can be turned off after the inductor current reaches the reference point. When the device is in DCM, the internal switch is turned off when the inductor current reaches zero.
