DC-DC converters efficiently convert a DC input voltage to a different output voltage or current. They are widely used in telecommunications, computers, electronic equipment and instrumentation. The LTM4649IY DC-DC converter is an integrated voltage-mode flyback converter with maximum switch-on current limiting and output overvoltage protection, designed for industrial and medical applications. It offers performance suitable for LCD TVs, set-top boxes, DVD players, DVR\'s, slot machines, point-of-sale terminals and other products.
The LTM4649IY is a member of the Micrel family of DC-DC converters. It uses a current-mode pulse-width-modulated (PWM) architecture to provide an efficient, highly accurate DC-DC converter with small external components. The converter is designed to operate with a wide input voltage range, from 8V-30V. It features low jitter (sub 20ns), selectable line-side frequency, cycle-by-cycle peak current limit and output overvoltage protection.
The LTM4649IY offers a generous input voltage range and a regulated output voltage, and is easy to use with a minimal number of external components. There are also features like fast start-up, low ripple, low noise and high efficiency. The LTM4649IY is based on a voltage-mode architecture and operates with a feedback loop, which helps to maintain the steady state output voltage. The primary side of the converter consists of an inductor, diode, diac (diode and capacitor), and the switch, all of which are connected in series. The circuit produces an output voltage that is proportional to the applied input voltage. When the switch is closed, energy is stored in the inductor, and the diode prevents any flyback action. The diac\'s capacitance is set to begin its conduction at the voltage level of the output stage.
On the secondary side of the converter, the energy stored in the inductor is transferred to the output stage step-up circuit, and related ac ripple is filtered by the output capacitor. This results in a low ripple output voltage with a frequency that is determined by the value of the inductor. The output voltage is further regulated by the secondary feedback. When the output voltage exceeds a certain level, the feedback signal is sent to the primary side, preventing the output voltage from going above its specified value.
In addition, the LTM4649IY integrates several protection circuits to maintain its stability. These include under-voltage lockout (UVLO), leading edge blanking (LEB) to reduce switching noise, maximum on-time protection (MONET) to limit switch-on current, over-temperature protection (OTP) and clock synchronization to keep switching frequencies within acceptable ranges.
