LV5065VB-TLM-H Application Field and Working Principle
The LV5065VB-TLM-H is a DC DC switching controller specialized for implementing DC-DC stepping-up/down and voltage control applications. Used as a primary control element in DC-DC converters, it provides greater flexibility and improved performance in converter design by overcoming limitations such as weak current drive, slow switching speed and narrow application bands. The advanced features of the LV5065VB-TLM-H improve power conversion efficiency, provide precise voltage regulation and reduce component tally.
Application Field
Used in various DC-DC converter applications such as DC-DC buck, boosted buck, buck-boost, flyback, forward, push-pull, half-bridge and full-bridge converters, the LV5065VB-TLM-H is an experimental workhorse. It features wide application power range (1W to 30W) with wide input voltage range (2.7V to 55V). Additionally, it’s offered in small-sized packages such as VSSOP and SSOP, making it suitable for the board routes with limited space. Moreover, it supports up to 90% efficiency. The LV5065VB-TLM-H is also capable of carrying out pulse frequency modulation (PFM) or pulse width modulation (PWM) type operation implementation.
Working Principle
Pulse frequency modulation (PFM) or pulse width modulation (PWM) type operation are selectable. The PFM mode is a variable frequency type (VFT) control with a variable duty ratios. The main feature of the VFT control is that the switching frequency remains high in the light load range and decreases in the middle load range. It was developed to reduce the switching loss. On the other hand, PWM mode is suited for constant frequency type (CFT) control applications. In this mode, fixed duty ratios are set and the switching frequency is constant. It is suitable for noise sensitive applications due to stable switching frequency.
The LV5065VB-TLM-H also features Independent MOSFET control (IMC) feature. When this feature is enabled, the controller can control two power switches independently (Ex. an N-channel MOSFET and a P-channel MOSFET). This enables designers to simplify the circuit and reduce the cost of external components.
Additionally, the LV5065VB-TLM-H offers both VC (Voltage Control) pin or FB (Feedback) pin Modes. In the VC Mode, the output voltage is set as it is appointed by the VC pin, whereas in the FB Mode, the output voltage is set as it is appointed by the FB pin. Thus, the FB Mode is more suitable for environments that necessitate precise voltage control.
It also features various circuit protections such as voltage drop-out (UVLO) protection, watchdog timer (WDT) protection and thermal shutdown protection. The UVLO protection sets a threshold such that the converter will shut down when the supply voltage is low. The watchdog timer monitors the activity of the switching frequency. If the activity stops after setting a certain range, the converter will shut down. The thermal shutdown protection monitors the temperature of the chip and shuts down the converter when the temperature exceeds a certain value.
