Working Principle
The MAX1044CSA is a step-down converter that utilizes the PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) control method. It selects a converter operating frequency that optimizes efficiency. It is designed to drive an external N-Channel MOSFET from an internal oscillator signal and voltage reference, and to deliver a fixed output voltage with minimum input/output voltage headroom. It can also provide protection from over-voltage (OVP) and over-temperature (OT). The MAX1044CSA has a wide bias input voltage range of 4.5V to 16V.
To begin regulation, the MAX1044CSA senses the current in the inductor and modulates a fixed frequency signal using PFM. It adjusts the ON time of the N-Channel MOSFET in response to the output current until a set level of current is reached. The converter keeps the output voltage in regulation, while switching at a high frequency. The high frequency of operation leads to efficiencies of 87%.
The MAX1044CSA includes an internal under-voltage lock-out circuit that prevents the regulator from turning on until the input voltage reaches a certain level. Furthermore, it includes an over-voltage protection circuit that shuts down the regulator before output can exceed its predefined voltage limit. The MAX1044CSA also has built-in over-temperature protection that shuts down the regulator when the die temperature exceeds the safe operating limit.
The MAX1044CSA is highly efficient due to its fast response time, low quiescent current, and tight voltage regulation. It effectively reduces the input current ripple, and minimizes the output voltage ripple.
