Working Principle

The MAX1044CSA is a step-down converter that utilizes the PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) control method. It selects a converter operating frequency that optimizes efficiency. It is designed to drive an external N-Channel MOSFET from an internal oscillator signal and voltage reference, and to deliver a fixed output voltage with minimum input/output voltage headroom. It can also provide protection from over-voltage (OVP) and over-temperature (OT). The MAX1044CSA has a wide bias input voltage range of 4.5V to 16V.

To begin regulation, the MAX1044CSA senses the current in the inductor and modulates a fixed frequency signal using PFM. It adjusts the ON time of the N-Channel MOSFET in response to the output current until a set level of current is reached.
