Data Acquisition – Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) technology is used to convert analog signals into digital forms. While ADCs are common, MAX166BCWP+ belongs to a special class of ADC known as a sigma-delta converter. This type of converter is based on a sigma-delta modulation technique, which is a form of pulse-code modulation with an oversampling algorithm.
The MAX166BCWP+ is a high performance, low power, monolithic, single-supply, 10-bit sigma-delta A/D converter. The device operates on a single 1.8V to 5.5V supply and is capable of directly digitizing signals up to the full-scale input range without the need for programmable gain amplifiers (PGA). The device is designed using an internal, 1st order continuously-time sigma-delta modulator. This modulator provides a 1MHz sampling frequency and a maximum sampling rate of 2Msps. The modulator also includes variable oversampling to reduce quantization noise as well as an internal PGA and output data averaging capabilities to reduce noise and increase resolution. The outputs from the modulator are sent to an input switched capacitor filter for further phase and amplitude shaping. The output from the filter is then sent to a 10-bit successive approximation register (SAR) ADC. The SAR core provides the final conversion from analog to digital information, from which the output code is generated.
The MAX166BCWP+ is designed for use in a variety of different applications including automotive, communication, and video. In automotive applications, it is ideal for a variety of different sensor applications such as pressure and temperature. In communication applications, it is well-suited for analog-to-digital converters in mobile phones and laptop computers. In video applications, it can be used in broadcast and streaming video applications.
