MAX1488ECSD+ is a 3.3V powered, true single chip RS-232 line driver/receiver. It operates from a single 5V power supply and can provide RS-232 signal at distances up to 1500ft (457m). The integrated transmitter and receiver of MAX1488ECSD+ allows designers to eliminate the need for an external transceiver and reduces the component count. It is designed for use in applications requiring RS-232 signal transmission over a wide range of both low and high speed.

Working Principle

The MAX1488ECSD+ features an integrated transmitter and receiver which allows it to transmit and receive RS-232 signals over a wide range of both low and high speed. It has an input voltage range of 5V to 15V. The device supports signaling and line driver speeds up to 500Kbps and generates output voltage swings up to ±15V and receiver supply currents up to 120mA. It also features a closed-loop biasing circuitry and an internal thermal protection circuit to ensure maximum safety.

The integrated transmitter and receiver also features a low-noise switching design, which eliminates the need for an external filter to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) and reduce radiated emissions. It also provides a low-input voltage, high-current output stage which is capable of driving long cables up to 1500ft (457m).

The MAX1488ECSD+ also features an integrated power-on reset (POR) circuit which monitors the supply voltage and shuts down the device if the supply voltage falls below a certain level. This feature ensures that the device will not inadvertently drive the RS-232 signals until a valid supply voltage is present. In addition, the device includes an integrated open collector receiver feature which allows the output voltage of the device to be shifted to the rail voltage by connecting the open collector pin (RL0) to the rail voltage.

The MAX1488ECSD+ features an integrated test pin (TX1) which can be used to monitor the transmit data of the device. This allows designers to easily troubleshoot and debug their designs as well as identify any potential problems in the system before it is deployed in the field.
