At the heart of the device is Firmashield ™, a proprietary patent-pending feature of Maxim Integrated. Firmashield provides high-speed operation in a very low-power consumption and is highly resistant to distortion and jitter components in the received signal. The core differential RX architecture also ensures a wide dynamic range with a high signal-to-noise ratio for all input signals, thus allowing for low-power error-free performance, even in the presence of power supply variation. Furthermore, the transceiver operates from a single positive supply, which is a great advantage for battery-powered applications. Last, but not least, an internal voltage regulator allows independent control of the voltage level and enables the device to handle the supply voltage range from 14V to 26V.

For improved reliability, the MAX1489EESD features a Thermal Sensor Reset (TSR) circuit and an Internal Voltage Regulator (IVR). The TSR monitors two internal junction temperature sensors, and in case of fault, it generates a reset signal until the temperature falls to a safe level. The IVR monitors the 3.3V voltage level of the device and generates a reset if the voltage exceeds a certain threshold.
