The MAX15016BATX+ is a low-power regulator module that combines a precise linear programmable-current sink and a high-efficiency synchronous step-down switch. It is designed to provide a wide operating range and an output voltage that can be adjusted from 2.97 to 9.1 V. It is both efficient and reliable in its operation—its wide input voltage range and low quiescent current feature make it suitable for a variety of applications in the power management, mobile communications, and consumer markets.

This voltage regulator module is mainly utilized as a “half-bridge” converter for distributed supplies for a variety of loadable devices with various operating voltages. With its high output current, low quiescent current (<1 mA), low voltage drop, wide temperature range operation (–40°C to +85°C), and small size, the MAX15016BATX+ is perfectly suited for applications in tight spaces, high-power/high-voltage supplies, and multiple point-of-load current sources, such as TV sets, portable digital products, and high-reliability applications.

The working principle of the MAX15016BATX+ can be easily understood by looking at the internal diagram of the device. The device consists of two main parts: the voltage regulator, which is based on a Linear Voltage Regulator (LVR) architecture, and the step-down switch, which is based on a Synchronous Rectification (SR) architecture. The LVR is responsible for providing a precise output voltage and minimizing output voltage variations due to load changes. The SR is responsible for increasing efficiency when the load current is large by providing faster response times and a much lower RDS(on) value.

The controller is configured in a two-phase buck topology and contains a linear voltage regulator (LVR) and a synchronous buck switch (SD). When there is a light load, the controller switches off the SD and uses the LVR for better efficiency and stability. On the other hand, when there is a higher load, the controller switches on the SD, thus achieving higher efficiency. The LVR provides a stable and accurate output voltage that is adjustable using an external resistor divider.

Furthermore, the internal circuit of the device is designed to optimize the efficiency of the device, ensuring that the output voltage is consistent with the inherent requirements of the particular application. The internal circuit also features an “enable” function which allows for easy and convenient power management of the device. This enables the device to be easily shut off when the system is not in use, thus saving energy and reducing power loss.
