The MAX1501ZETE+T is a high performance switch-mode battery charger designed for applications such as portable devices, cellular phones, and handheld computers. Its integrated power management IC (PMIC) provides a complete charging solution for both single-cell and multi-cell lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. The MAX1501ZETE+T is optimized for low power, high efficiency, and low thermal dissipation while providing intelligent safety features to protect the battery, system, and charger. It is specifically designed to meet the needs of portable applications and to address the needs of the ever-changing battery technologies of the future.
The MAX1501ZETE+T is part of a PMIC - Battery Chargers family of products that includes other types of battery chargers. These include charge-only, two-level charge-only, linear, trickle, and fast charging. The MAX1501ZETE+T is designed to provide a full-featured fast charging solution for both single-cell and multi-cell lithium-ion batteries. It features a wide input voltage range of 2.5V to 6.5V, adjustable charge current up to 500mA, 30mA programmable trickle charge, and adjustable fast charge termination voltage from 3.5V to 4.4V. It also features three status pins (AC, CVCC, and EOC) to indicate the state of the charger. The MAX1501ZETE+T is designed for space-limited applications and can be mounted on a host PCB.
The MAX1501ZETE+T works on the principle of switched mode power conversion, where the power supply temporarily switches between an input voltage source and a battery. The input voltage is regulated by an optimized control loop while supplying constant current to the battery. This technique helps regulate and maintain the battery’s health while providing higher charge current and allowing fast charge termination. During fast charge, the current is regulated by a programmable loop set by the user. This loop will reduce the charge current during the constant voltage stage of the charge cycle and eventually turn off the charger if the set voltage limit is exceeded. During the trickle charge stage, the current is maintained at a constant low level until the battery is fully charged.
The MAX1501ZETE+T offers a combination of features that make it ideal for applications requiring a high performance, space-limited solution such as portable devices, cellular phones, and handheld computers. Its wide input voltage and adjustable charge current, programmable trickle charge, adjustable termination voltage and three status pins make it ideal for applications requiring fast charging, and its low power, high efficiency and low thermal dissipation make it suitable for power-limited applications. Additionally, the MAX1501ZETE+T is designed to meet the need of changing battery technologies and is capable of charging any size single-cell or multi-cell lithium-ion battery.
