Application Field

The MAX1647EAP+T has a wide operating voltage input range from 3V–20V and features an integrated, general-purpose power switch. It is capable of charging most popular battery types – such as Li-ion, Li-polymer, and NiMH – and can deliver up to 200mA of constant current. It is also capable of supporting pre-charge and trickle charging modes, as well as adding a host of features to enable functional safety and enhanced system performance. Additionally, the device can be placed in a sleep mode for power-down conditions.

Working Principle

The MAX1647EAP+T operates on the flyback topology, meaning that the voltage applied to the input of the device is converted to a higher voltage at the output. The device consists of an internal pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller, which has a minimum of two high-side MOSFETs, one of which is used to control the charge current and the other to control the voltage. The device also features several integrated functions such as over-voltage protection, short-circuit protection and over-temperature protection.

The device contains an integrated soft-start circuit that prevents inrush currents from damaging the components in the system. It uses an adjustable current sense circuit to monitor the battery current during charging and ensure that the rate of charge does not exceed a safe level. The device also has a power-path management feature, which allows the device to continue to provide power to the system during a power cut.
