Application Field

The MAX1672EEE belongs to the family of PMIC, voltage regulators, DC/DC switching regulators and is especially suitable for general purpose12V to 3.3V main power source, as well as 5V down-regulated intermediate bus. Applications include a wide range of telecom, computing, and consumer products, such as power-supply voltage regulation for disk drives, DSPs and microprocessors, such as microcontrollers, modems, and ASICs. Working Principle

MAX1672EEE uses a two stage operation process – synchronous rectification Buck converter and Linear regulator – which delivers highly regulated outputs with excellent efficiency and power density. The Buck converter houses an integrated N-Channel MOSFET, low current sense voltage and a high-voltage internal reference, providing a complete and cost-effective solution. It typically operates at a fixed frequency of 1.2MHz and utilizes PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) modulation control technique to regulate voltage across the load and also maximizes efficiency.

The linear regulator uses an external resistor divider and provides an extremely low output voltage ripple along with very low standby current. By controlling the input voltage and varying the amount of switching of the MOSFET using PWM the output voltage is regulated and remains constant.

The MAX1672EEE also boasts a number of features that makes it a great choice for many applications. These include its low dropout voltage and excellent line regulation, as well as its high switching frequency, fast transient response, over-temperature and over-current protection. Additionally, it has a wide operating temperature range and is compliant with the Automotive Electronics Council’s AEC-Q100 Quality Standard.
