The MAX16828ATT+T is a PMIC - LED driver that provides highly integrated and intelligent lighting capability to light emitting diode (LEDs). The device provides precise current control, dimming, and configurable and robust fault protection, all while complying with latest external control requirements, including the Automotive AlterLED standard.
The MAX16828ATT+T LED Driver maintains precise LED output current, compensating for LED forward voltage, LED thermal rollback, and LED differences due to binning, aging, and temperature. The LED driver feature set out pacing the competition with longest dimming time, widest range of ratio current and short circuit protection, considered core elements in the automotive lighting.
The MAX16828ATT+T is ideal for automotive exterior and interior lighting, as well as industrial and general lighting applications. The device can be used to control single or multiple strings of LEDs in series or parallel configurations.
Application Fields
MAX16828ATT+T is designed to address automotive lighting systems, including rear lamps and interior lamp modules, and non-automotive applications, including general illumination, LCDs, and solid-state lighting modules. The device can also be used in commercial applications such as sign boards and billboards.
The MAX16828ATT+T offers performance and reliability that are now required by most automotive applications. The integrated current sensing capability and differential fault detection meet the most stringent automotive requirements so that OEMs can be assured that the device will perform robustly in the field. The MAX16828ATT+T also offers high accuracy current matching for up to 16 LEDs, so that all LEDs can be uniformly bright in any application.
Working Principle
The MAX16828ATT+T employs a monolithic integrated circuit and inductor to generate an adjustable, regulated current in an LED or LED string over a wide input voltage and temperature range. Its primary benefit is its ability to accurately and dynamically control the output current for up to 16 independent LED strings to adjust LED output in response to a digital dimming signal. The LED driver also offers smart thermal management, adjustable current range and maximum LED strings current.
The MAX16828ATT+T requires only a few external components, including an inductor, output capacitor, and LED string, that minimizes total bill-of-materials (BOM) costs. This integrated, programmable LED driver has a wide input voltage range of 5V to 32V and offers a fixed current range up to 2000mA. The outputs of individual strings can be enabled and disabled via a selectable non-dimmable or dimmable current range. The MAX16828ATT+T offers a wide low-end range for dimmable LED strings with current level controlled between 0.25 mA and 400mA.
The MAX16828ATT+T provides a number of features including PWM dimming, differential fault protection, and analog dimming. The device can be configured for a variety of dimming frequency, from PWM signals from 0Hz to 500kHz, and includes condition detection that adds diagnostics for short circuit protection.
