MAX1684EEE+ is a high-power monolithic integrated step-down Switching regulator. Specifically, this DC/DC converter is designed to efficiently supply up to 150 W of continuous power from low voltage DC sources including Li-ion/NiMH/NiCd batteries, USB, and other 5 V to 36 V sources. It is ideal for powering applications that require a tightly regulated output in a wide range of demanding applications, such as microprocessor-based systems, FPGA/CPLD logic, DSPs, industrial systems and distributed power.

Features and Working Principle

MAX1684EEE+ features an integrated synchronous rectifier, providing high efficiency, low noise operation and the ability to operate at full load from temperatures as low as –40°C.The peak current-mode control scheme promotes fast transient response, while the internal compensation and soft-start circuitry help to ensure stability over a wide range of load conditions. Additional safety features include circuit protection against over-power, over-temperature, under-voltage lockout, and auto-recovery.

Furthermore, the device has an input voltage operating range from 4.5 V to 35 V, while its output voltage range is either preset or adjustable through external resistors. It also features a selectable PWM switching frequency of either 500 kHz or 1 MHz, and power-saving burst-mode operation.

The working principle of MAX1684EEE+ consists in varying the duty cycle of the rectifier\'s output switch, thus controlling the amount of energy transferred from the input to the output. Since the input and output voltages of the converter are held at fixed values, this technique allows the device to precisely regulate the output current of the load, thus resulting into a stable output voltage.
