The MAX1688EUAX or its full name, \'High Voltage Boost Converter with Shutdown Mode’, is an ultra-low-power DC-DC voltage converter for use in portable devices. This tiny and powerful switch-mode regulator uses a 1-channel boost converter operating step-up voltage topology and can draw current from or supplies current to 1.5V to 6V input or output voltage ranges, respectively. Its simplicity of design to generate a higher output voltage from a single-cell Li-ion Battery simplifies the battery management circuit of a mobile device.MAX1688EUAX is a non-synchronous switch-mode regulator that takes input power from the battery side and boosts the voltage at the output side. This high voltage buck regulator offers a complete, small circuit solution to provide up to 5.6V at up to 150mA in shutdown mode. The device also provides an internal input current limit, manual reset and fault detection circuitry as well as protection features such as over/under voltage protection, over temperature protection, over current protection and reverse current protection.The most important part of the device is its main controller or the MAX1688EUAX IC, which provides the necessary information to the control circuit of the Buck regulator. The control circuit almost always includes a buck transformer, one or more switching transistors, a current sensor and a control loop that adjusts the duty cycle of the output switch and the output voltage.Other components of the control circuit are usually the power switch, the rectifying diode, the output capacitor and the inductor. The current sensor measures the actual current flowing through the inductor, and then the duty cycle is adjusted to maintain the current at the preset value. The output voltage is then measured with a voltage divider from the output and is compared to the reference set point given to the control loop by the MAX1688EUAX. When the output voltage is higher than the reference set point, the duty cycle is reduced, and when the output voltage is lower than the reference set point, the duty cycle is increased.The switch on the output side is constantly turned on and off, resulting in the output voltage being adjusted relative to the input voltage, according to the duty cycle of the switch and the output voltage ripple is minimized by the output capacitor. The design of the entire switching regulator is such that it draws the least amount of power and give the most efficiency, despite the lack of synchronization between the input and the output.The MAX1688EUAX SW regulation is highly preferred due to its ability to operate with very low power, resulting in low battery discharge rates, which is essential in portable devices, and the full MAX1688EUAX SW regulator can give up to 97% efficiency at only 5mA of current draw.In conclusion, the MAX1688EUAX is a highly popular DC-DC converter regulation due to its ultra-low power consumption, maximum efficiency and its reliable operation.
