The MAX16935EVKIT is an evaluation board for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS, used for the evaluation of the MAX16935 offline switch mode power supply controller. This controller IC integrates an array of features for controlling off-line switch mode power supplies, including an embedded power FET, Soft-Operator transition and valley detection scheme, programmable current limit, thermal limit protection, and so much more. This evaluation board allows designers to quickly and easily evaluate the MAX16935’s features and performance.
The MAX16935EVKIT utilizes the MAX16935IC to design a low-voltage, high-current, off-line power supply operating from 100 VAC to 230 VAC input. The board offers two output configurations for either a single output for higher current output voltage or two outputs to yield individual low power voltages. The application field for this board includes not only your typical AC/DC off-line power supplies such as those used in consumer applications, but many industrial and commercial applications as well.
The MAX16935 is a highly integrated device, which eliminates the need for external sensing, current-limit and other support components. It uses a proprietary Soft-Operator algorithm to control transitions between the Active-Normal and Skip modes. Ridge and valley detection holes are used to eliminate the need for external current-sensing resistors, thereby sizably reducing component count. The device has eight programmable parameters, such as the oscillator frequency, constant-current turn-on time, hysterisis, boundary voltage, and soft-start time. It also offers over-temperature protection, current-limit protection, and over-voltage protection.
By integrating all of these features onto a single chip, the MAX16935 simplifies the design of an off-line power supply. The MAX16935EVKIT was designed to maximize the features of the MAX16935, allowing designers to evaluate the outputs and features of the device quickly and easily. The board includes a MAX16935 IC, a EMI FIL1 capacitor, a MAX1511 IC, an opto-coupler, a flyback transformer, output capacitors, and many other components. The flexibility of this board makes it suitable for a variety of applications.
The MAX16935EVKIT is configured as a single stage off-line forward converter featuring a 400V MOSFET and a 100V MOSFET for the main switch, enabling it to achieve a high efficiency of over 92%. It supports switching frequencies up to 500KHz. The device also supports auto-restart and hysteretic current limiting with over-temperature protection. The output voltage can be adjusted from 5V to 23 V, with a maximum output current of 18A.
In addition, the board includes an LED, a potentiometer, a temperature sensor and a USB port for monitoring and controlling the operating parameters. The board also supports a serial port for communication between the PC and the evaluation board. This port can be used to update the firmware, check the voltage and the temperature, select the switching state, and more.
