MAX16936RAUEB/V+ DC DC Switching Regulators

The MAX16936RAUEB/V+ are Synchronous Step-Down, DC-to-DC Converters with integrated MOSFETs that can deliver up to 4A of continuous load current from a 4.5V to 28V input. The fixed-frequency PWM controller also features proprietary over-current protection (OCP) and Power Good (Open-Drain) outputs.

Working Principle

The MAX16936RAUEB/V+ is a synchronous buck converter that works on fixed frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) with current-mode control. The PWM controller is implemented with a low dropout voltage regulator with an error amplifier for output voltage feedback and current sense resistor for current sensing. The output voltage is compensated and applied directly to the error amplifier input. The internal oscillator runs at a frequency set by the external resistor-capacitor (RC) network connected internal PWM controller.

The internal power MOSFET switches are turned ON and OFF at a rate determined by the internal oscillator. During the ON period, the inductor current is sensed by the internal current sense amplifier and limited to the value set by the external current sense resistor. After the transistor is turned OFF, the inductor current continues to circulate through the diode and return back to the input and creating a ripple at the input and output voltage. The internal compensator is designed to regulate and maintain the output voltage at the level set by the external voltage feedback. The internal power MOSFETs are also designed to keep the inductor current within the programmed limit, ensuring the maximum power delivery.

The MAX16936RAUEB/V+ also features a selectable input voltage range of 4.5V to 28V, 6V to 24V, enabling it to be used in a variety of applications. It has programmable output voltage soft-start feature, allowing designers to control the power up sequence. In addition, it has an integrated Power Good (Open-Drain) output that can be used to notify the system in case of an overload or over-temperature condition has been detected.
