Maxim Integrated\'s MAX17080EVKIT evaluation board is a comprehensive evaluation tool intended for evaluation of the MAX17080 DC/DC buck switching regulator. The board features a three-phase synchronous buck module, a resistor-capacitor (RC) output filter, and an optional boost module. This evaluation board is designed for on- and off-line applications, such as Universal Serial Bus (USB) power delivery (PD3.0/PD2.0) and Power Delivery Controllers (PD).

The MAX17080EVKIT evaluation board is optimized to evaluate the MAX17080, and therefore features a dedicated buck PSU controller with the DC/DC buck module, a resistor-capacitor (RC) output filter, and a boost module. The evaluation board is designed to supply a DC output for applications operating in isolated and non-isolated AC/DC systems and ideal for low-voltage, low-power applications. The board also supports an optional external current sensor to detect the output current.

The MAX17080EVKIT evaluation board features the integrated switching regulator with embedded high-side, low-side MOSFETs and non-synchronous rectification. It also has an integrated a pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller at the input stage which controls all the parameters of the switching regulator setup. This PWM controller is responsible for performing the transients and ensuring a stable output. The MCU block on this board monitors and controls the design parameters by using the I2C interface. It also provides additional control features such as Output Power Limit (OVP), temperature duty cycle (TDC) and data logging.

The board features a high-accuracy current sensor at the output stage without which the current limit feature would be ineffective. The board also comes with an optional, programmable over-temperature protection (OTP) feature, which activates when the output temperature reaches an elevated temperature threshold to protect the component from thermal damage.

The main objective of the evaluation board is to demonstrate the functionalities of the MAX17080. During its evaluation it is essential to ascertain its performance in different operating settings against input voltage, output load and temperature. This board enables the user to make the required adjustments to the output voltage using Digital-to-Analog converter (DAC) in its program. These DACs also provide an output voltage level control via I2C registers. The evaluation board also permits in-circuit monitoring of the voltage levels, switching transients, and other parameters as required during the evaluation.

The MAX17080EVKIT evaluation board is optimized to maximize the performance of the MAX17080 in DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS applications. The board is ideal for USB power delivery (PD3.0/PD2.0), Power Delivery Controllers (PD), power-supply and related applications. The on-board monitoring and control features help users easily evaluate the MAX17080 for applications such as laptop adapters, PLCs, digital x-ray imaging systems, automotive modules, etc., that require regulated 3.3V power rails to be generated from a 5V and 9V to 24V input.
