MAX1709EUI+: Application Field and Working Principle

MAX1709EUI+ belongs to PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators. It is a simple and efficient alternative power solution to replace the traditional linear and less efficient switching regulators, and it is particularly suitable for small battery-powered applications. The MAX1709EUI+ integrates a low-RDSON, high-frequency power MOSFET, inductor and other passive componentson the same pactical device. This will save the cost of external components, layoutarea, and reduce the system power dissipation.

This high-efficiency step-up regulator adopts the forced pulse-width modulation (PWM) with digtail control. The MAX1709EUI+ also serves as an inductive switch with a precise shutdown circuitry, which can preventreverse current from entering into the system.

Working Principle:

The MAX1709EUI+ is able to provide up to 95% efficiency. Here are steps ofoperation:

  1. VIN< DVIN:The MAX1709EUI+ will work in forced PWM mode to keep the output voltage. If the input voltage is below the undervoltage lockout threshold (UVLO) level, theIC will enter the shutdown mode.
  2. VIN > DVIN: In Forced PWM mode, the switching and the synchronous rectifier are ON.
  3. VOUT > VFB: When the output voltage is higher than the feedback threshold (VFB), the internal comparator will drive the synchronous MOSFET toturn–OFF. The SW node will go Low and the synchronous rectifier will beOFF.
  4. VOUT < VFB: When the output voltage is lower than the feedback threshold (VFB), the internal comparator will drive the switching MOSFET to turn-ON, then the SW node drives the synchronous rectifier to turn–ON. Then the synchronous rectifier will boost the output voltage up to the regulation level, and this cycle will repeat.
