The MAX17620EVKIT# evaluation board is a complete power management board designed to enable the evaluation and prototyping of the MAX17620 step-down battery charger and other power management applications. MAX17620EVKIT# works in a range of DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS, and offers flexibility to enable efficient and robust battery charging operations.

The MAX17620EVKIT# evaluation board implements a well-defined switching power converter to transfer energy from a DC power source to a battery pack. It can be configured to step-down, step-up, or bidirectional operations. The board supports a wide range of voltage input (4.5V to 60V) and output voltage (1.2V to 24V), and system working power range of 20mW to ~25W. It also implements a regulated output current for battery charging.

The MAX17620EVKIT# is useful for evaluating and prototype testing applications in fields such as telecommunication, automotive, and industrial, and professional audio. The board can be used to power a wide variety of electronic devices, such as Electronic Control Units (ECU), Battery Management Systems (BMS), Industrial Fire Safety Systems, and Radio Frequency Applications (IFRA).

At the heart of MAX17620EVKIT# is the MAX17620 integrated circuit, a versatile power management solution. It is a synchronous buck-boost charger that implements a highly efficient power conversion algorithm. The device is designed to optimize efficiency in the target applications, saving power and reducing heat dissipation. It operates in a step-down configuration and has a current-mode control loop.

The MAX17620 is programmed using an internal non-volatile memory (NVM) store. The board can be programmed with various Charge Point, Current, Voltage Regulator, and Dynamic range parameters. It also supports pre-programmed modes which can be used to select one of several pre-defined charging parameters. The board also provides its own unique User Interface (UI) for programming and adjusting the Application.

The MAX17620 also has two main operating modes: fixed voltage and Current Limited Operating Mode (CLOM). In the Fixed Voltage Mode, the MAX17620 will maintain a constant output voltage until the target charge current is reached. In the CLOM, the MAX17620 will limit the charge current based on the user input range. The MAX17620 also features a soft-start feature, which allows the board to slowly approach the desired output value(s), eliminating inrush current.

The MAX17620 also contains a Dynamic Maximum Charge Current feature. This feature allows the board to autonomously adjust the maximum charge current value to accommodate a range of battery capacities. Additionally, it provides a process of Voltage/Current Balancing (VCB) which helps to balance the overall load between cells of the same battery pack. By enabling efficient power management, the MAX17620EVKIT# board provides an effective evaluation platform for a range of DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS applications.
