MAX1802EHJ+ Application Field and Working Principle

MAX1802EHJ+ is a special purpose voltage regulator falls in the category of Power Management ICs. It is highly suitable for automotive, digital still camera (DSC), and portable multimedia equipment like MP3 players and digital cameras.

MAX1802EHJ+ is a very efficient power regulation IC and support both linear (LVI) and switch-mode (MSM) voltage regulation. It can operate on input voltages up to 42V and incorporates over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP) and thermal protection as safety features to protect the IC as well as the device it is powering. Equipped with a foot-print optimized integrated inductor (DLPEI), it can deliver a maximum current of 1A.

It works on the principle of inductor-based DC-DC buck (step-down) conversion and makes use of the MOSFET switches to control the inductor current. The MAX1802EHJ+ has two independent power output ports, each featuring an output voltage range from 0.8V to 18V. The output voltage is adjustable by a single external resistor or two external resistors for dual port designs. It is possible to program a slew rate for both outputs to keep area and cost down as well as maintain the desired performance.

The MAX1802EHJ+ output is symmetric and provides ±2% accuracy over the full temperature range in both parallel configuration and single output mode. The IC is further equipped with a power good (PGOOD) output that is open-drain and an integrated internal circuit reset. This allows the output voltage of the secondary voltage node to power up quickly in the right sequence with all protections active.

The MAX1802EHJ+ integrates all the electronic components needed for small and cost effective DC-DC conversion and helps to minimize board space, total system cost and BOM count. An external low cost, small form factor inductor makes it ideal for space and cost conscious applications.

The MAX1802EHJ+ is RoHS compliant and utilizes robust multi-chip modules to meet AEC-Q100 qualification for automotive applications. It is available in a small 6mm × 6mm 24-pad QFN package and is specified for a temperature range of - 40°C to + 125°C.
