The MAX1873REEE+ is a member of the MAX18XX Series of high performance, low overhead power-management integrated circuits from Maxim Integrated, designed for efficient and cost effective battery charging in portable consumer and consumer accessories. This integrated system provides all the necessary circuitry for quick and reliable battery charging with the target system having minimal extra hardware or software overhead.
The MAX1873REEE+ is a high-performance linear-charging charger specifically designed for Li-Ion / Li-ion polymer batteries. It offers at least 95% efficiency while dynamically adjusting the output voltage and current to achieve a constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) charging profile during the charge cycle. It provides a variety of features such as programmable current limit, thermal protection, reverse current protection, overvoltage protection, and reverse-current protection. It also has a fully integrated Coulomb counter for accurate state-of-charge monitoring.
The MAX1873REEE+ comes with an integrated power transistor and uses the Power Path current path architecture to maximize system efficiency and reduce power dissipation. The power transistor is optimized to handle up to a 4A charge current in given applications. There is also a low drop-out (LDO) voltage regulator, switching power supply, charge control system, and power good indicator. Each of these components are optimized for individual applications for improved system performance.
The MAX1873REEE+ is designed to meet the charging requirements of portable devices powered by Li-Ion / Li-ion polymer batteries. The charge current can be programmed directly with the ILIM1 and ILIM2 pins to set the charge current threshold. The charge typically progresses from a pre-charge trickle current to a fast-charge stage, and then to the final topping charge current steps. The charge is complete when the VREG voltage reaches 4.2V or the battery current reaches a programmable termination level. This integrated system monitors the battery temperature remotely with an external NTC thermistor.
The MAX1873REEE+ can also provide a power boost function to support multiple simultaneous loads once the battery is fully charged. The power-boost circuit allows the charger to supply load currents up to the charge current while maintaining battery voltage regulation. At the same time, the battery charging continues by adjusting the internal loop compensation to optimize system performance.
In addition, the MAX1873REEE+ has a built-in auto detect feature to recognize the voltage of the battery and automatically set the correct charge current and termination voltage. This maximizes system efficiency and safety. The charger also provides protection measures that prevent overcharging and short-circuiting, ensuring reliable operation of the system.
