The MAX1896EVKIT evaluation board is an off-line, DC/DC and AC/DC switch-mode power supply (SMPS) system consisting of a flexible power-supply controller and a dedicated power stage optimized to the specifications of the controller. The board is designed for applications requiring a high-efficiency power supply from a universal input voltage source. The board is ideally suited for providing power to ASICs, FPGAs, memory, and other integrated circuits requiring a 3.3V, 5V, 12V, or 15V supply rail.
The power-management system on the evaluation board provides synchronous rectification, valley switching, and pre biased startup by controlling the power switches and a multi-phase, interleaved DC/DC converter. The board also includes a non-standard pinout buck-boost controller to modify loop response by altering the feedback network of the primary side.
The output voltage is adjustable from 1.8V to 13V, while maximum output power is 150W with a universal input-voltage range of 90–264V, with no additional loop compensation components. The power-supply controller also features auto-restart after a power-fault event, such as an overvoltage or overtemperature condition. The MAX1896 evaluation kit supports a wide variety of application conditions with wide-range adjustable frequency from 10 — 999 kHz, and adjustable soft-start and adjustable current-limit features. The dedicated power stage designed for the controller provides integrated circuits for high-efficiency voltage-regulator applications. These include high-speed current-sense amplifiers and bridge rectifiers.
The board includes an array of power connectors to enable multi-rail architectures that are ideal for multi-rail application-specific systems requiring higher power. The evaluation board also includes a low-ripple, multi-rail controller to provide active power-supply performance in high-power, multi-rail applications, and this helps to decrease total board area while also creating efficient and cost effective multi-rail power supplies.
The board also allows users to minimize the size of the printed circuit board (PCB) by minimizing external components while maintaining tight electrical specifications. The integrated power-supply controller’s design optimizes the layout and minimizes the number of external components, while allowing the user to modify the power-supply voltage and current as needed.
The power-supply controller offers an intelligent auto-restart feature, which securely and quickly restarts the power-supply system in the case of a fault. The power stage consists of state-of-the-art MOSFETs, metal-oxide varistors, ferrite beads, and other components, designed to provide superior power-supply performance.
