The MAX1926ETC+T is a high-efficiency step-down switching charger designed specifically to rapidly charge single-cell Li-Ion (Li+)batteries. This maximizes the output efficiency while regulating the output voltage and temperature of the battery. It supports a wide input voltage range from 2.6V to 20V, making it suitable for a variety of different applications. Additionally, the chip has low DCR current sensing, which enables it to record the currents and temperatures of the Li+ battery accurately.

Working Principle

The MAX1926ETC+T is a step-down switching charger that uses a buck switching regulator to convert the input voltage to the lower output voltage. The IC has an internal N-Channel MOSFET that switches between the two voltages sources, from the input to the output. The IC also has a current sense resistor and a Temperature Sense resistor that monitor the current and temperature of the Li+ battery, respectively.

When the output voltage is greater than the set charge voltage of the Li+ battery, the internal MOSFET will enter a "valley" of low current while waiting to switch back to the higher voltage. During this time, the current sense resistor will measure the current and report it to the IC, which can then adjust the switching frequency of the MOSFET to keep the current within the set limits. The Temperature sense resistor can also measure the temperature of the Li+ battery and report it back to the IC. This information is used to adjust the switching frequency in order to maintain a safe charging temperature.

Once the Li+ battery has reached its charge voltage, the IC will enter a "top-off" phase where it will gradually reduce the charging current in order to prevent overcharging of the battery. The IC also has a low-side N-Channel MOSFET for charging current protection. If the current exceeds the set limits, the MOSFET will shut off, preventing damage to the Li+ battery.
