MAX1972EEE+ Application Field and Working Principle

Introduction:

MAX1972EEE+ is a non-synchronous step-down DC-DC converter embedded with voltage mode control architecture, embedded with SuperHigh frequency operational capability. It is capable of converting an input range of 3.2V to 5.5V down to a regulated output voltage of 1.2V. The switching frequency at 2-MHz offers better efficiency solutions with low heat dissipation, and also permits to keep the external inductor size small, as compared to the typical 1MHz PWM controllers. The ready-to-use power solution occupies <0.8 sq. inch of board space and requires only one external inductor, therefore is suitable for various space-constablish applications.

The MAX1972EEE+ DC-DC converter is an advanced switch mode power solution designed for high performance applications. It can be used in variety of applications such as mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras, hand-held wireless devices, automotive infotainment systems, general industry motor control, battery management, and solar micro-inverters.

Working Principle:

The MAX1972EEE+ operates using its internal twin switch topology throughout its switching frequency period. It contains two power knobs, one for its internal PWM and another one for soft-start. Such configuration eliminates off-time spikes and reduces saturation losses, resulting in a better efficiency performance. When the input voltage rises above the set threshold voltage, the chip turns on the internal PWM signal generating circuit. The internal PWM is then used to control the oscillating frequency of the input switching transistors. While the MAX1972EEE+ features a built-in frequency foldback feature, users can choose to adjust the operating frequency to suit the application from 500Khz to 2.0Mhz. When the duty cycle of the PWM is adjusted, the output voltage can also be adjusted for better load-regulation.When the MAX1972EEE+ is turned on, the power-on reset function will activate the soft-start circuit generating a saw-tooth voltage that varies in magnitude from 0V to 5V. Eventually, the power MOSFETs will be turned on to begin inductor current, consequently the output stage supplies power with a ramp-up output voltage, without causing any glitches on the output voltage.
