The MAX1974EUA+ PMIC is a step-up (boost) DC/DC voltage regulator designed to achieve output voltages up to 5.5V from input voltage sources as low as 0.7V. The MAX 1974EUA+ is a pulse width modulation (PWM) control with a wide input voltage range of 0.7V to 5.5V, adjustable output range from 0.8V to 5.5V, and output current up to 1A.

The MAX 1974EUA+ includes both an internal power switch and an input/output block made up of integrated power MOSFETs, low on-resistance N-channel FETs and a PWM buck-boost power stage, eliminating the need for external transistors. It also includes protection features such as input under-voltage lockout, output over-voltage protection, short-circuit protection, and thermal protection. The switching frequency is programmable and can be adjusted up to 500kHz.

The MAX 1974EUA+ provides excellent efficiency and transient response making it ideal for battery-powered applications such as portable audio players, cell phones and wireless devices. The step-up boost voltage regulator can be used to boost up to 5.5V necessary for applications such as powering an LCD display and LCD backlighting.

The MAX 1974EUA+is based on a fixed on-time (FOT) topology, which features a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller and N-channel MOSFETs. The FOT circuitry provides constant on-time operations with minimal operating current and eliminates the need for synchronization and compensation network. The high operating frequency of 500kHz allows the use of small output inductors and capacitors for a compact solution size. Additionally, the enable (EN) input allows for simple ON/OFF control.

The MAX 1974EUA+ also features several input and output protection features. The input under-voltage (UV) protection ensures that the supply voltage remains within the operating range. The output over-voltage protection monitors the output voltage and shuts down the device in the event of an over-voltage event. Short-circuit protection prevents the output from short-circuiting the device and destroying the internal components. Thermal shutdown protects the device in the event of overheating and helps to maintain stable operation.

The MAX 1974EUA+ is available in a 6-pin TDFN package, making it ideal for use in space-constrained applications. It is suited to a wide range of applications, such as portable instruments and wireless communication applications.
